I am a college student in Civil Engineering, currently located in the U.S. but soon relocating to Australia. It took a long time to decide on this career path, but now that I am all in, I am motivated to not sit idly by while we misuse our global land resources and build less-than-perfect urban worlds.
I believe in natural environmental protections, in not building sprawl, in limiting the use of high-polluting infrastructure materials and practices, and in ultimately building infrastructure that works for everyone. However, my greatest focuses in life are on environmental protections and women’s rights. I spend most of my time thinking about my future, and what I can genuinely do to make the world a better place.
I have been interested in the work and research of Strong Towns, as its ideological basis and engineer-founded identity resonates with me more than your everyday urbanism. However, I would still consider myself an urbanist, although I stray from desiring bike lanes in my community. I don’t really like to bike. I just want to feel like a person, and build/live in a built environment that isn’t so overwhelming to partake in, and gives me the ability to move through much of the environment free of both harassment and charge. We humans used to live in an environment that nature provided, but now we live in built environments, so my life goal has become quite simple, just bring back the feeling of being free and the feeling of enjoying the world you see every day for as many people as possible, through better infrastructure and/or multi-building design.
I also have a goal of opening my own little slice of heaven, a nature preserve, one day. And if that’s what my life work mostly adds up to, I’d be okay.
